They call it a deadline, today the meaning of this word has been toned down severly for a reason, when you pass the line you're dead, at least you should be. Requesting for a deadline extension is fine if a proper reason is given.
On that note What the hell is up with Indonesian and deadlines? when the onus is on them they ALWAYS request for a deadline extention but if the onus is on the other party they always demand the burdened party to meet the deadline.
