Absurd Logic

I don't like to argue much about beleifs and religion........wait, that's a complete and utter lie, I like doing it but not for the sake of proving myself right or establishing my position but more into deconstructing the logic behind the whole concept.

Hearing some supposed religious individuals argue against another regarding the merits of one over the other however is better than watching sitcoms, the arguments will always spiral down to the basic "my daddy is better than your daddy" (I was going to use another example which involves a specific human male organ but it just doesn't seem appropriate).

multi tasking

I am currently surfing through the net with 3 different browsers opened, Firefox, Opera and IE, out of the 3 I actually prefer firefox but for some reason it's extremely unstable on my office PC, it crashes, quits for no reason and shows computer languages on some pages.

Opera is by far the most gimmicky browser I've ever used the tab browsing and built in search engine is a standard in any browser these days but the rest of it are probably things I won't even need, nifty but that's about it, the upload time is definitely slower than firefox.

With IE I don't have that much of a problem except its excessively slow loading time which the main reason why I switched to the other browsers.


Post Scrpit: I just had my fears confirmed, it's not the browsers that are unstable, it's the damn OS.

Ah May, the 5th month of the year by Gregorian standards and not 2 days ago was the day when some jackass German took a pill and shot himself in the head not that it bears any significance to the following month and yesterday was May day where once a year every working person would run out and call for help, some say it's the 8th day of the week between Tuesday and Wednesday but nobody seems to notice.

Let's take a look at today in history.

1945 - Some German General surrendered a German City to some Russian general. Nobody else but the Russians cared

They have been under fire from many aspects of society, some treat them as diseased, a threat to society, sub-normal or mentally ill, religious communities have treated them as sinners and laws have been made to limit their rights and ridicule their existence even further only because they are considered as different.

Now I could be talking about a lot of things here, African descent, Women, Homosexuals, Jew, Chinese, Muslims, Anglo Saxon, Christian, Arab, Mac users, Communist or just pick any social, ethnic, political group and I mean any and I can assure you they have been ridiculed one way or the other.

Today Gay is the new black, but not in a good way.

Fun things I do when I'm bored

The U.S Second Amendment reads;

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

I'm no legal expert, I wish I was but I'm not, so honestly I have no idea what's being said here and I'm willing to bet that I don't think the majority of people REALLY understand what it's saying. So I'm going to break it down despite of my lack of knowledge (granted to me by the powers of free speech).

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State..."

The first issue here is the definition of Militia, to my understanding it's just about everyone who can pick up arms when required by the governing body (not necessarily the State) to conduct martial activities.
What of the term "well regulated"? would it be safe to assume that it means an organized regularly trained group? if so "A well regulated Militia" could mean any able bodied individual who are part of a regularly trained militaristic group. In modern terms this could fall into several categories; the military, civil defense groups and police force* amongst others, basically paramilitary.
So as a whole the first part could read as "In the interest of State security, a regularly trained force are necessary"

Now for the second part,

"...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Well, taken out off context this reads exactly like what it says, that "the people have the right and shall continue to have the right to have and bear arms" (but not arm bears which I don't think is very fair). Now since they separate "Keep" and "bear" I would assume keep means own and bear means to carry and the rest should basically be quite clear.

When the whole passage is read it would read as "In the interest of State security, a regularly trained force are necessary and that the people have the right to own and carry arms"

Or should it be read as "Every member of a professionally trained military or paramilitary group are allowed to own and carry weapons in the interest of State security"?

Like I said I'm not a legal expert, heck I'm not even American so why should I care right? I don't, really, I just have too much time on my hand.

*The Police force while not a military body conducts the role of the guardian as defined by Plato though on a different scale.

It's amazing how money has the ability to disappear without any sort of logical explanation, it's impossible that I spent more money in one week than I usually do in a month without any sort of major purchase. Why is it every time I decide to save some cash for something else it just seem to evaporate? and when I don't have any intention of saving money for a particular purpose it just piles up before something happens and I have to spend more than I want? I hate cosmic balance.

Ah yes, Thursday, the 4th regular working day, the fifth day of the week if you believe in the "Sunday first" convention, and one day away from a weekend, which I would be able to enjoy if I don't have to work on the weekend again on BOTH days, but enough about that, we're talking about Thursday now. Has anyone ever wondered why hey call it Thursday? was it supposed to be the 3rd day of the week? or is it because it's three days before Sunday? No Thursday happens to be Thor's day, yes, the Norse god of Lightning/Thunder.

But wait, why does the predominantly Christian society that is the English recognize a germanic pagan god? even to a point where they call to it more times than they say "Jesus", while at the same time Roman culture was the predominant culture in most of Europe in the pre-Christian era. Some of the European languages makes reference to Jupiter when referring to this day and not Thor, even the Japanese call this day Mokuyoubi in reference to Mokusei or the planet Jupiter in which the planet was named after the Greek god of lightning.

So what's with the reference to a Norse god instead of a a Greek one like most Europeans do? This is because the English language and culture are more exposed to the old Germanic culture before the Romans set their foot into what is now called England.

For those overtly devout Christians who wonder "why must we make reference to pagan gods every time we refer to certain days of the week?", It's because if you don't you'll have a Mjolnir shoved up your hole and be struck down by bolts of lightning.

I usually don't talk about the things I see during my sleep, mostly I don't even remember dreaming other times it's just too insignificant. Last night however was different I can vaguely remember it clearly, it was about a new apple software called "theater", a movie making program that works just like garage band but with an interface like iMovie, sort of a cross between the two.

It works like garage band because you can pick, drop and various actors and actions from the palette, non generic speeches/sound are recordable just like in GB, all "actors" speeches are synchronized with their lip movements while non generic actions actions can personally be added with apple's camera and have the "actors" imitate the recorded action. A wide range of sample scripts are available for the users to choose and are also editable.

The tag line on the package says "Like Hollywood in a box"

Unclean.....

After watching 300 I was reminded of something that my lecturer mentioned back when I was still doing my undergraduate studies; that societies are shaped through habits, rituals written and unwritten laws and values, and what better way to enforce values than using the various forms of mass media. The power of the media is so potent that the mass (or general public) may be socially conditioned or engineered by constant exposure of a concept.

300 is by no means the most violent movie I've ever watched but it is a prominent feature with rolling heads, detached arms and feet and an excessive amount of stabbing. Yet as I was watching it I saw some people grimaced over what was happening on the screen while some (including myself) just sat there and watched it like any other movie, I was not shocked or excited as some people may have done when I saw some heads flew, I said excited because some people do like to over react on some things (and I try to avoid watching movies with people with such reaction), I just watched it with no particular emotional thought and not because I know it's just a movie, in fact I do believe (with scientific and historical proof) wars in such period is that violent if not more, but perhaps more to the fact that I've been exposed to that amount media violence that it becomes normal.

What becomes my concern is when people personally witness such violence for the first time would they react the same way to it as they have reacted to media presented violence, with indifference, or would they react differently? Mind you that my concern is not about seeing the negative or positive aspect about desensitization but merely questioning whether desensitivity towards media presented violence translate to "real" violence.

(Long)Weekend update

I wonder why I feel so tired this morning, I just got off a 3 day weekend....oh wait that's probably why. Unsurprisingly nothing special happened over the weekend, except for Sunday. Last Friday I ducked out of work early because I needed to see someone regarding other employment options and a few other things we talked for about 4 and a half hour about the type of work, possible placement, the state of the clienteles and how to deal with them and so on and so forth.

I can't seem to remember what happened on Saturday aside from playing games and reading books I even have doubts about that......oh wait that's right I went out shopping for food.

Sunday..... now I have to say I really enjoyed last Sunday, a very good friend of mine came over to take a look at the newly born kittens. I spent the first half of the day preparing the ingredients I bought the day before and waiting for the right time to cook, the dilemma with spaghetti is that they're really easy to cook yet they cool off quite quickly so needed to wait for the right moment to cook it, even then she ended up coming in later than I thought so when she told me she was about 10 minutes away I had to reheat the food, it ended up being too dry for my taste but my friend said she liked it so I was relieved and I still can't come up with a name for my own cooking. We then chatted for a while, catching up on a few things and talked about our problems, I just don't like her comment on my tie collection, I like my tie. It's not everyday I can enjoy my weekend like last Sunday......and I do realize how stupidly giddy I was for the day.

Monday was hot, I can't see how else to describe it, it must have been the hottest day since the previous Monday, so I decided to make myself a kiwi-strawberry juice semi-slurpee to cool things off while watching a sumo match on TV. Good thing it rained at noon for a few hours, it rained hard enough and long enough to stop the silly preacher from talking for the rest of the day, sadly they came back at night.....they always come back at night.

So that was it, that was my weekend it's a bit of a mixed bag, thankfully nothing disastrous happened.

Food for thought

for some reason this just popped into my head:

Salmon wrapped fried chicken (serves 1-3)

4-6 pieces of medium sized chicken breast
4-6 thinly sliced salmon
2 eggs
50g flour
3-4 cloves of garlic

-------------------

-Heat water until half boiled
-Peel and crush garlic
-Add crushed garlic to boiling water
-Boil chicken until cooked
-Beat egg in a bowl
-Wrap each chicken pieces with salmon
-Dip salmon wrapped chicken to the egg
-cover with flour
-Deep fry until brown
-Serve with lemon slices and tartar sauce or melted garlic butter and mashed potatoes

It is said that truth goes through three stages, first it is ridiculed, then it's violently attacked and finally it is self-evident. I have no disagreement about this concept however I would not consider the third stage to be the final stage, I'd like to propose another stage of the, that is of irrelevance for the truth will remain true until it is proven false or it looses its relevance.

Serenity

While it is an awesome movie no this entry is not about the movie. I now have new office area it's small, cold and if you're claustrophobic you'd hate it but since I'm not I actually like it, it gives me space to do my own thing without a lot of distraction. The bad thing is I have to swap with my other colleague every other week so I only get to use it for 2 weeks in a month.

In for repairs (finally)

I so don't want to work today.....My morning started of like usual, my alarm goes off at 04:30 to drown out other unpleasant noise coming from outside, played some games then went back to my room to read and listen to music until it's about 06:00 then i went about my business. I left at 06:30 and arrived at the office at 07:15. Since I backed up everything in my new Hard drive I thought I'd reinstall the iBook only to find out that my HD was screwed, again, the internal drive was still not detected.

As I mentioned in my previous post it has been screwed for some days now, I thought of bringing it for repairs on the weekend but I had to go to a wedding on the Saturday, then I went to Java jazz in the evening so that's Saturday out and on the Sunday I was meeting a friend of mine again until about 16:00 so that's Sunday out.

I swear, running a notebook from an external HD is tedious when you bought it for the sole reason of portability. Yes, I know it's rather sad when a person gets depressed over a busted computer.

Numbers of job applications sent CV's sent, a lot.

I've just about every reason for rejection, Under qualified, over qualified, under experienced, no visually presentable feature (god damn TV stations), insufficient reference etc. the list goes on

At this point I am still being picky about the jobs I applied for but not because of the payslip (though it its a factor) it's more to career enhancement plus I still need to get enough money to do a postgraduate degree. but I'm sure as hell can't do anything with my current wage, heck even a slight increase wouldn't help at all.

I'd sell my soul but I'd have to have one to begin with.

I have a new theory about myself, I have a stronger magnetic field than most other people. This is the 2nd time my iBook's hard drive went wonky, now it's occasionally detectable but for some reason unrepairable through 2 major disk fixing programs well, I'm going to have to buy a new external hard drive just to try and save whatever data I can salvage right now if there are any left. Seriously though I'm guessing my internal hard drive keeps on acting funny because the internal coolant system is busted.

Then there's the office computer, this is the 3rd time in 6 months I have to send the blasted thing to I.T to have it physically repaired, first I thought it was just a typical WinXP feature to auto shutdown when you're typing e-mails or reports, then I thought it was a virus sent through the "series of tubes", now they tell me it was a loose component in the box, how the hell do you do that when you hardly touch the damn thing?

Don't you just love those thick juicy meat once you take it out of the grill ready to be chewed? I particularly like it if it's smothered with garlic butter. There are those who view its consumption with disgust while others prohibit it outright, me, I don't listen to those people, I have nothing against those people, to each his own I say as long as you don't tell me what should be on my plate, I just like to eat stakes.

Vegetables on the other hand, you pick those things straight from the ground where you spread processed animal dung all over it, now who in the right mind would eat food marinated for months with processed animal litter.

OBJECTION!

In all societies there is one constant that is of the law, or to interprate it loosely rules, it may even be said that the law of the land (and it's implementation) reflects the society. Since the emergence of a structured society various laws and legal rulings have been made and changed according to those who are in charge of social control, in modern terms this body is generally understood as the legislative body.

In most cases members of the legislative body are given the right to create and interpret the law while in other cases, such as societies that abide by the Islamic law, the legislative body have not the right to create laws, therefore in such societies legal ruling should not be given or may be considered as invalid if the ruling is found to be in conflict with the law itself, while it may sound obvious such cases have occured in the past.

In modern democratic societies however the infalibility of the law regardless of its source has come under constant scrutiny and the legitimacy of a law have come under question when it is considered to be disadvantageous or unjust to a particular segment of the society. On the other hand, in religious societies, partcularly of those in the same religious community do not question the law and does consider the law itself to be infalible, the interpretation of the law however have differed from one community to another and have infact come into conflict with each other.

The importance of the law is not something to be neglected or ignored however rules and regulation is best to used maintain a safe degree of order in a society instead of fully controling it therefore for society to progress safely laws and its interpertation, much like the society itself, have to be subject to change to maintain order.

Thank god it's Friday I finally get to get some rest. I was seriously close to reaching my breaking point today, I conteplated throwing down the gauntlet on some parent today but me being me and a certain aspect of my job requires me to keep my temper in check. As always I have to work again tomorrow but at least this woll take my mind off all the frustrations I have to deal with in the past week.

on a less related note, in fact it;s not related at all! I don't like being forced to change my username to some dumbass google account but the change is for the better I guess I'll probably tinker with it some other time, oh and HEY GOOGLE! MAKE BLOGGER MORE SAFARI FRIENDLY WILL YOU!!

extreme displeasure

Muscle cramps are never a good thing, they cause a degree of discomfort and sometimes a significant amount of pain, yet they can be easily avoided with correct preparation. However, sometimes the condition strikes in the most unexpected time and in the most unexpected place usually resulting in an elevated amount of pain, like for example testicular muscle cramp in the toilet while defecating.

I have to say I love the slogan for the Australian DIMIA...no...DIMA...that's not it either..DIA....certainly not that....DIC.....not quite.....DIAC that's it! the Australian Department of Imigration and Citizenship, apparently they don't seem to see Indigenous People and Multiculturalism as something worth noting anymore...... oh yeah back to the slogan I'm not sure how long it's been this but "to enrich Australia through the well managed entry and settlement of people", pretty straight to the point I guess......very "Howardy".

I really don't feel like doing anything today, being the last day for a colleague and someone who I consider to be a close friend of mine working here. By the end of today we'll say our farewells, good lucks and keep in touch's yet how many of us do "keep in touch" really? well plenty probably I'm just too lazy to do it. Come to think of it there is some merit in people calling me a anti-social then again unlike most people I don't like to live beyond my means.

on another note,

I find my predicament, for a lack of better word, annoying, the most frequented non productive website in the office is that damn friendster site that every other person on earth who are plugged to the net have an account in and visits just about every other hour yet they firewalled Live Journal making updating it from the office impossible for me and I tend to forget what I wanted to post there once I get home, I'm going to have to back-log quite a few from the last few days on that.

oh the hilarity......

Yesterday evening just when I was about to go home it rained again it was quite heavy until about 17:30 when it turned into light showers so I decided to go and cross the road from my office to catch a cab (the fare's cheaper that way). I waited 15 minutes for a cab, funny how none of them were empty, then the rain started to pour heavily again by this time I was already half way through to a shopping mall hoping I could get a cab there, by the time I got into the mall I was drenched (second time in the week), my iPod was still functioning and since it was raining no cabs were stopping by since there were no shelter for people waiting for cabs, which means no readily available cabs. So there I was waiting for the rain to stop so I can go to the other mall to catch a cab home listening to Utada Hikaru's "僕はくま" (I'm a Bear).

I don't get it, why does rain in this part of the world almost always pour when people go TO work in the morning or evening when people go home FROM work, it's hardly ever in the afternoon DURING work where most people are still inside the building.

I was browsing through various linked articles in Wikipedia when I stumbled upon "Kiev", yes the Ukranian city of Kiev. There was nothing significant about the article itself but it did remind me of Chicken Kiev. Mmmm Chicken Kiev......

Just another day

Well here I am again at the office, after being soaked last Sunday I would have thought that I'd be sick but it seems like I've run out of sickness since last week.

I'm not exactly looking forward for the end of the month either, a colleague of mine is resigning by the end of the month due to "personal" reasons, she never said what it really was and I probably would never find out what. I usually don't get affected by people leaving but it's a different case with this one, let's just say it's "personal".

Well guess there's nothing I can do now but make tea.

Great Timing!

Hey, guess what? I'm working on a Sunday, again, usually I don't mind but for some reason I really don't feel like going but here I am anyway, soaking wet from the rain. I took a bike ride from home to work, again nothing that I usually have a problem with except this time half way through the ride the skies opened up and rain started to pour which brought me in my current state, cold and soaking wet good thing I have some clothes here in the office.

Rinse and Repeat!

If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly while excpecting different results, then I'm pretty sure I'm bat-shit insane

I may be exaggerating if I said I was close to "taking the journey home" when I was sick, I mean people have died from fevers before and I reckon 41 degrees is quite high for a human being. Now the question that lingers in my head is why didn't I just kick the bucket when I had the chance? All I had to do was lock myself in the room and refuse all kinds of medical treatment and that'd be it and I see no reason why I shouldn't. Damn me and my tendencies to miss good opportunities.


Chalk this one up for things I should do but didn't.

This is officially the fifth day I've been sick since last Thursday perhaps the longest time I've been sick since I hit puberty, It strated as small coughs then it turned into fever now it's back to the cough though much more severe than the first one and with an added constant sweating, the cold type and dizziness. In any case I guess I'll try popping back into the office tomorrow see how I hold out, I don't think the fever's going to come back for now but just to be safe I'll have to go through the day slowly, if that's even possible.

I'm a really hot guy! Seriously!

Looks like I'm sick, again, for the 2nd time this week. Well monday was really exhaustion more than anything but I still couldn't do anything, now I've got a fever of god knows how many degrees, I actually forgot, my guess is 37 C but that's just what I think. stayed at the office until around 13:00 I realize I was in no shape to work when I started to forget the things I said one sentence prior. I got back from work early today, like 4 hours early and once I got home I decided to play my PS2 but I wasn't in any condition to even do that, so I ate some chicken soup, drank some juice and went to bed.

Now here I am blogging instead of sleeping simply because I out-slept myself, yet I feel dozey regardless, oh well at least this one didn't come with a splitting headache, except when I sneeze.

Looking at the current form of human communication when compared to the past I hypothesise that the future of human communication can be summarized in this excrept of futurespeak between 2 people.

While the above may sound mostly incoherent by most people today it is almost assured that at one point in human history human language will evolve into such form.

Stop! Hammer time!

Ah finally back in the regular office hours of 08:30-17:00. Since last Friday me and a colleague had to arrange several things for what was supposed to be a huge 2 day exhibition (which it was big, kind of, about 8000 attendees over 2 days),on the Friday we mostly did booth checking; fixing spelling erors, arranging table and chairs, easy stuff it took us 2 hours from 19:00-21:00.

Over the next two days we were assigned tothe General information, there were lots of questions that we couldn't answer simply because the question were really meant for each visiting institution (how should I know which Hongokng University offers education as a course), aside from that the single most common question was "where's the toilet". We hung around the convention from 09:00 to 18:00 on Saturday after which we went to a dinner invitation, I was previously informed that there will be a free buffet and a free flow of that bitter golden colored bevarge, my old University student habit kicked in. I got back home at around 23:00.

The sunday wasn't that different either, exhibition form 11:00-18:00 and a dinner invitation, this time by the Hong Kong Trade Development Commission (HKTDC), no alcohol involved just a fancy full course dinner at the Hotel formerly known as Hilton (a.k.a Sultan) which I admit was very nice, one of the HKTDC people commented that the hotel was "showing signs of it's age" which I have to agree with considering that I used to frequent the hotel a while back. Over the course of the dinner we talked about a few things mainly about living and the current living cost in Hong Kong, education cost, employment opportnities for fresh graduates and social and business trends amongst other things, the rest of the night we had a nice sophisticated fun. The dinner was finished at around 21:00 which I decided to go straight home thinking I would still be in shape to work the next day.

Yesterday I woke up tired and I wasn't feeling very well, in the morning my throat was sore from talking too much the previous night, I called in sick and stayed home all day sitting in front of the T.V playing games all day.

Now I'm going to make a cup tea.

Interesting point

Yesterday one of my colleagues played a song from her computer, I wasn't sure what the song is called but I was certain that it was Adam Sandler's voice I heard, the song itself was not to my particular liking but what it is saying reminded me of a question I had a sometime ago, When the hell did emo become cool? the song I heard was clearly a mockery of this fact. These days you can hardly switch to a radio station (never mind the fact that I hardly ever listen to the radio) without listening to some moron whine about how the want to die, how their lovers left them and want to die, how they were disapointed by someone and want to kill that person and then kill themselves after or how they stub their toes to a table leg and wants to die, quite the contrast compared to gangster rap music from the same period where people seem to enjoy killing other people and brag about it.

I guess the the major part of the late 20th century up to now can be described as the new great depression and the popularity of these emo crap clearly shows that there are a large number of people who wants to die, like to think about dieing (preferably by suicide) or they just like to be depressed, It's depressing really, makes me want to kill myself.

odd feeling

For reasons best be kept to myself I'm not feeling very comfortable with the current state things, questioning why on this matter is not going to do me any good. I guess it's one of those things that I'll have to let pass, I mean why the hell not it seems like I've been doing that quite often lately anyway.

Times like this I wish I was fishing or running through quests in Azeroth.

Wow, it's been almost a month since I last blogged here and before I know it it's 2007 already, damn you office firewall! Looking back at last year it was actually quite different than the previous years, for instance, I now go to an office instead of a classroom, having to wear "work shoes" for 5 days is another, aside from that I went through quite a bit of things, some better than others while the others are best unmentioned though personaly I don't feel I've changed that much.

Now on to more important things, I find this years 紅白歌合戦 to be quite disappointing, it wasn't as explosive as the previous years too many slow songs and not enough fun music to be enjoyed, even モむwasn't as good or as large as last years. I have to agree with one comment though, 生紅白、最高, although not as lame as "wardrobe malfunction" NHK has to seriously come up with a better excuse than body suits seriously.

In any case, 今年もよろしくお願いします これからこのブロッグをもっと面白くなりますように...って無理かも。

oh and as an addendum the harrowing sound of rogue fireworks are now drowned by sudden rain, 神様、私の祈りを聞くと感謝しています.

Come and witness the horrible paper waster viewable in my office! The paper waster or as is commonly known to the punlic as the Xerox Phaser 3210 PCL 6 occasionally prints paper like anyother printer but more than often it would gobble 3 to 5 pages at once before it chockes on it, once chocked it requires a considerable amount of force to dislodge the paper, rarely the paper goes unscathed but more often it would ruin the paper making it unpresentable due to the excessive force applied in an attempt to dislodge it, sometimes causing sever damage to the paper (ripping it to pieces). Dislodging the paper requires extra caution as the heat inside may reach up to 180 degrees centigrade, enough to scald human skin..... or bake cookies

Request for removal and replacement of this abomination have been submited but is currently meeting heavy resistance from the finance division.

Expansion pack

Following my recent acquisition of a new filing cabinet I was required to expand my work area to accomodate the filing cabinet, expanding my overall work area (and leg swinging space) by approximately 0.5 meters square. I have also acquired a white table cloth to put on my new filing cabinet so the color will not clash when I decide to position my iBook on top of the cabinet, the table cloth also has the effect of preventing the bottom part of my iBook to be in direct contact with the cold hard steel cabinet.

The position of my new cabinet is next to my old wooden cabinet that I use to store my personal effects, the positioning of these two cabinets can be defined as a cabinet meeting.

After supervising an English test for almost 2 hours while reading "On sovereignty" (selected writings from Hobbes' Leviathan and Locke's Second Treatise of Government) I sat back behind my desk to do some browsing on the net (because I couldn't do what I was supposed to do), naturaly I went to uncyclopedia to waste my time as always, as ths internet god would have it Xenu was one of the first links I saw, yes, Xenu, those things from scientology. Naturaly I clicked it, the article itself was quite funny and retarded as all uncyclopedia articles are what was different was it had a direct link to wikipedia's entry on the same subject. After a thorough reading of both articles I am now confused, I thought uncyclopedia was supposed to be the retarded one.

It's a quiet late morning (10 am ish) all my colleagues called in sick and I'm alone in my office sitting on my desk with a slice of tiramisu and a mug of hot lemon tea while the sweet sound of a piano melody playing in the background courtesy of Iwashiro Taro.

Back on the job

Hmmm...seems like it's been a while since my last update, naibly because the office computer just firewalled all my blogsite including this one, I couldn't view or update anything. So that's one of the reason, the other being the hard drive on my iBook just sort of died, good thing I backed up most of the things I need with the exception of my adium and iChat buddy list no biggie though since I never did have a lot on it anyway.

First things first, as I mentioned some time ago I applied for a another job sometime ago before the holidays well I wasn’t accepted, I wasn’t really hopeful in the beginning but it would have been nice to get it, same old story as always they told me I was under experienced, which for this one I actually agree with, but that’s that.

During the break I was reminded of a time when I was unemployed I managed to finish reading 3 books and do almost nothing else but sit and play games or watch TV which to be honest was quite relaxing. On the other hand it was a forced holiday taken under protest, by me, simply because I had a whole pile of paper work to do and not a lot of time to do it, but nonetheless I stayed home and did nothing. The break was meant for the Moslem majority to celebrate "eid", giving them a chance to visit out of town relatives, although the majority of my family members are Moslem we didn't have that many relatives outside Jakarta that and I’m really not fond of tradition so I stayed at home, occasionally having some guests over. I have no problem with it in principle but I do have a problem with being forced to take a holiday on a highly inappropriate time other wise known as "last minute University intake period".

Now that one holiday period is over I'm here sitting back on my office chair typing this blog after 3 mugs of tea and a long day of filing, data sorting, counseling and a particularly troubling predicament which was caused by negligence on my part resulting in a situation which I can only describe as "Oh shi...", I have a feeling I'll be having a very long break if doesn't get sorted soon.

How many people does it take to cut down a tree in the Korean DMZ?

Some time ago in the Korean DMZ, "the UN Command determined to cut down the tree using an overwhelming force. The operation was conceived as a US/South Korean show of force, but was also carefully managed to prevent further escalation.

Operation Paul Bunyan was carried out on August 21 at 7 a.m., just 3 days after the killings. A convoy of 23 American and South Korean vehicles ('Task Force Vierra') drove into the JSA without any warning to the North Koreans, who only had one observation post manned at the early hour. In the vehicles was a 16 man U.S. engineering team with axes and chainsaws who immediately started cutting down the tree, while one of the trucks was positioned to block the Bridge of No Return. The engineering team was accompanied by a 30 man security platoon armed with pistols and axe handles. In addition, a 64 man ROK special forces team accompanied them, armed with clubs and trained in Tae Kwon Do.

A U.S. infantry company in 20 utility helicopters and 7 Cobra attack helicopters circled behind them. Behind these helicopters B-52 bombers, escorted by U.S. F-4 fighters and R.O.K F-5 fighters were visible flying across the sky at high altitude. At Osan Air Base, F-111 fighters had been armed and fueled, ready to take off at short notice. The Midway aircraft carrier task force had also been moved to be stationed just off-shore. In addition, near the edges of the DMZ, many more heavily armed U.S. and ROK infantry, artillery, and armor were waiting to back up the special operations team. The bases near the DMZ were prepared for demolition in the case of a military response.

North Korea mobilized about 150 troops armed with assault rifles who watched in silence as the tree was felled in 42 minutes, and a violent confrontation was avoided. Also removed were two road barriers illegally installed by the North Koreans, while the South Korean troops also overzealously vandalized two North Korean watch posts. The stump of the tree was left as a deliberate reminder."

blurry light in the middle of the road

I'm currently stuck at a crossroad with one heading straight forward and the other to an uncertain path. I've been given an oportunity to apply for a job where my skills and knowldege in my field may improve although I am clearly underqualified but that's the least of my concern (my experience in the field is merely academic) I may not be that fast of a learner but I can adapt quickly, having to work in one of the country's major hotspot is also not a concern, in fact I find it exciting.

My primary concern is much like everyone else, stepping out of my comfort zone, I currently have a stable job with little responsibilities, the pay is not much but it gets me by so far and that my current working environment is very friendly and relaxing in fact some people may be envious of it but I know that my current job won't get me anywhere if I stay.

I have only thought about it in less than 12 hours and it is highly unlikely that they will hire me considering my limited qualification but I've decided to apply for the new job anyway if I'm accepted I will start sometime mid October (it said "starting date:immidiately").

The Internet

The most awesomely powerfull tool ever founded by God, some people may have claimed to invent it but is it was already there to begin with, that's how God looked for information and bought the materials to create the entire galaxy.

Sometime earlier this week someone stole my Internet, the office server was somehow infected by a virus or perhaps it wa a whole host of virae so my Internet was taken away from me automatically caused me to lose m ability to do any form of work, that's where I discovered another part of Hell, it was none other than endless session of solitaire and mind sweeper combined with auto shutdowns, it was scarrier than Dante ever imagined.

In recent news

The Thai Prime Minister declared a state of emergency yesterday while attending a UN general assembly in New York after hearing that the Thai armed force enterd the Thai capital of Bangkok and occupied government buildings and media stations. The coup is one of many attempts the Thai Military have done to take over the government but it never succeded simply because nobody cares. The Military apparently also didn't give a flying fuck and declared the state of emergency void.
In Thailand's long modern political history the Military have done perhaps more than a dozen attempts in taking over the government since the 1930's but because nobody cared it hardly ever changes anything.

New resident new problems

Just with everything in life adding a new element to the household will cause problems. It's sad looking at an animal that's used to living in a large room with a predominantly cool temprature having to be locked up in a small cage with warm temprature, it's sad me to see her in that state I wish I could realy understand what she wants.

Ichi go Ichi E

Often translated as "One encounter, One chance", a common phrase in the world of Japanese martial arts meaning that you only have one chance in in making a strike, similar to the Latin phrase "carpe diem". It is usually used to encourage a person to strike at an opening as soon as it presents itself without delay. This is the same concept that I use when making a snappy comeback when a person say or do something stupid in my presence.

Much of the same concepts I practice in martial arts are applicable in the art of a snappy comebacks. The 3 "sen" mentioned in Miyamoto Musashi's famous Book of Five Rings are also applicable.

The first "Go no sen" is an attack performed after the opponent makes a move, generally known as a "counter" is the most common practice in snappy comebacks.

The second, "Sen no Sen" is to attack at the same time as the opponent but for it to be successful the "comeback" must be better than your opponent so that theirs will be rendered useless/worthless.

Finally "Go no sen", to attack an opponent even before he can makes a move, generally known as a "pre-emptive attack", perhaps the most difficult to practice well as it requires the ability to detect an opening before the oponent realize he/she has an opening.

Much of my comebacks are done in the state of "Mushin", roughly translated as "no mind" that is they are mostly done naturaly without the need to think although I still have some difficuty when asked to demonstrate my skills out of context.


I wish my Kendo is as good as my comebacks, I'd probably be a 5th dan by now.

Loosing my Way

It has been more than a year since I moved back to Jakarta, it's not strange how moving to a different environment can change people but it doesn't stop it from being interesting. Since then I have gained several things and lost many things both positive and negative things, those who know me would probably find small differences yet when I look at myself the small things that have changed made a huge difference, what was then serenity became carelessness and confidence became borderline arrogance.

I never made an issue of people's perception towards me but when I look at myself and I don't like what I see things will have to change, now is probably a good time for me to take a few steps back and move forward differently.

There are many reasons why people do the things they do mainly it's devided into necessity and wants the other can be classified as accidents. The forst two things are usually very distinct to each other yet at other times they overlap each other and when they do things starts to get rather confusing then you'll loose perspective of what you had to do. The third catagory are mostly done subconsciously one example is where your wants are constantly suppressed by the lack of necessity to do so or maybe because you know it's a stupid thing to do but in the end you do it anyway. Resutls coming from an accident varies depending on the current and future variables and in accidents the laws of cause and effect are more evident usually supported by your mind or someone else saying "see I told you so" whatever the outcome may be. The laws of cause and effect however also applies with things done out of necessity but it is not as evident as accidents or wants.

Interupted thought

I was about to post something deep and meaningful (for me anyway) about wealth, power and knowledge and how we're all addicted to it, it all fell apart when I heard my manager and former manager arguing about whether his watch was chronological....and the mentions about his watch being an old timer.....I just couldn't hold myself, all previous thought just disapeared.

I find it strange when good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. In times like this people usually tell others to have faith, funny concept that, faith, beleiving in something that is uncertain. I'm curious to know what the concept of justice really is in the eye of the Beholder, those who steal, rob and kill gets away without reprocussion while those who are trying to do some good to the world are cut down in their prime.

As I was reading through the University of New South Wales's list of Undergraduate Courses I came across a very interesting undergraduate program called Bachelor of Planning. I am sure it's a very good degree to take but I couldn't help myself thinking whether or not they also offer a Bachelor of Scheming so students can take a double degree in Bachelor of Planning and Scheming, it'd be a great start for your political career.

A matter of linguistics

As I was sitting in a cafe last weekend sipping my cup of tea I overheard a conversation about how governments in a democracy should act in the best interest of its people and government officials and public officials in effect should be working for the people and not enriching themselves with public funds. While do agree with what this person was saying the entire conversation was conducted in Indonesians so there were a few words which I found strange and unfitting in a democratic government.

The word "pemerintah" in the Indonesian language bears the inherent conotation of superiority over others as the word itself may be translated to "the one who orders" as oppose to the one's who regulate.

Then again it may just be the mentality of most Indonesians that they do not wish to be govern but to be ordered around.

During the cold war two of the most powerful nations stood on opposite sides of an ideological conflict. The USA and USSR began competing for influences in smaller states through economic and military strength, it is also in this period that both countries competed for nuclear dominance. Some have argued that through this unchecked nuclear arms build up that relative peace was able to be achieved between the two great states, the mutual awareness that both countries are able to reduce each other and the rest of the world within minutes through nuclear destruction was to be later understood to as the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction or M.A.D, an acronym befitting for the time.

After the Soviet Union lost control of their Warsaw pact allies and smaller states under its influence which led to the eventual collapse of Communist Russia the level of nuclear proliferation became higher than it had been during the Cold War. With the increase in availability of weapons grade plutonium in the weapons black market it meant that smaller states and non governmental "organizations" and various paramilitary groups were able to obtain nuclear weapons with relative ease.

It is arguable that even with the United States being the sole remaining super power the world have been kept in a relative peace in the years after the cold war. However it had been made clear at the end of the 20th Century that the world is facing a new a different type of war, this was made evident on with events of September 11, 2001. International extremist groups, unlike countries have no homeland in the traditional sense, it spreads through ideologies that transcends borders, generations and race. Although it can be argued that terrorism have existed long before the 20th Century began organized international terrorism in such a large scale was only evident in the closing of the 20th Century.

With the increase in availability of nuclear weapons in the weapons black market and the more organized extreme politico-religious group it is feared that such group may have obtained and developed its own nuclear weapons, unlike the relative comfort the world had during the cold war with the Understanding of Mutual Assured Destruction (U-MAD)to assure that no nuclear weapons were used and without a single physical target it is much more difficult for governments to eliminate such threats, on the other hand, infiltrations to countries and government by such organized groups have become more plausible due to the mobility and fluidity that is inherent to these groups.

With the world's only super power state leading the assault it seems that governments have done nothing but strike blindly at an enemy that can not be seen causing destruction at random places. As terrorist groups attack a specified target with a very visible enemy and The US attacks a country that may or may not be the enemy we have entered a new self imposing doctrine of Totally Assured Random Destruction or T.A.R.D and as the war continues with the world's only super power constantly selecting targets at random this war will fall into a doctrine of Random Endless Assured Reoccurring Destructions or R.E.T.A.R.Ds

In conclusion, during the cold war the world was kept at a relative peace with the doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction the M.A.D doctrine. However with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of a new kind of warfare against a new kind of enemy the world will soon fall under the doctrine of Random Endless Assured Reoccurring Destructions or R.E.T.A.R.Ds

I don't get it, where do all these rumors about how bad an education institution is when they are clearly considered as one of the best in the world? It's always "I've heard XY Uni is bad" or "if my child have to go there he might as well not go to university", for one thing it's really not my business whether their kids go to uni or not but it becomes my problem when they defame a uni just because they heard it was bad but can't give a reason why.

There are times where ethics becomes a major dilema in the work place, the majority of people I know seems to often mistake being nice for being ethical and sometimes prioritizing being nice to being ethical to satisfy the client.

There are clear cases of breach in work ethics, there's always the regular lying and stealing in all of its form but there are cases where it is seemingly much more complex than that, like putting the interest of a third party who is the financeer of the primary client ahead of the said client and a middle ground is not in the best interest of your client, then there are cases where nice and ethical are in oppposition to another, in this case for most of the times clients couldn't care less about ethics and wants to be treated nicely despite how inethical it may be.

The majority of people would be conflicted when faced with this sort of problem, some would prefer to be nice, others would do what is ethical and a few others call their managers/supervisor, which is probably the safest thing to do, so if anything goes wrong after that it wouldn't be your fault.

To me I prefer to do the ethical thing even if I loose one or two clients, however it's not a matter of integrity, it's not a matter of profit, it's a matter of doing things the right way so they can't blame you for not doing it right.

Maybe its just me but I enjoy telling people that their failure is due to their own stupidity.

Actual Weekend round up, part 2

It's nearing sundown and so far I have done nothing particularly productive in the last 5 days (including today) and I like it. Well it's been one heck of a weekend, cancelled dates, game hunting, gaming, no phone calls. It was almost perfect I was close to doing what I aimed to do this entire weekend which was doing absolutely nothing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not lazy, lazy is not wanting to do something, I on the other hand wanted to do nothing which was something I couldn't manage to do, I ended up doing nothing productive but I still did something. It is my way of reaching that spiritual enlightenment.

O.K so technically it's not a weekend yet but might as well be since starting today I'll be on a very long 5 day weekend, neat huh? well not really since someone cancelled on me again but that's ok, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a Psychologist with massive emotional issues because it's her "赤日" and since I can't cancel my Friday leave I guess I'll just have to go somewhere else.

Not a lot of things to at the office today, for once, just cleaned up my tables did a doodle of a character that me and my younger brother made sometime ago called "the writer" modeled after well....me, with what supposed to be my fedora and my old coat, maybe some posting is required but not now.

Bored to petrification

Wow, this must be the lowest point in human excitement, in fact excitement or productive activity equates to practically minus infinity at this point. I never imagined that you can actually go to work and near nothing to do, I've posted at least 4 blogs by about now since about 7am, my thumbs have been fiddled to a point where it went to auto-fiddle for a moment I've done practically almost everything I can think of in an office environment including attaching any loose paper clips I found lying around, all files have been sorted and re-sorted, all sendable document have been sent and I'm done searching for strangely related things in wikipedia.

I bet a stone statue would have more fun than this.

When planing to start a new non democratic country

1. Make sure you have nuclear weapons, don't just plan on having it.
2. Try to make your country the a central port for the region.
3. When holding a pro democratic activist prisoner make sure you have a stable economy.
4. Your country must be the worlds centre for manufacturing and cheap labor.
5. Have one of the best public health system.

and last but not least

6. A strong (or seemingly strong) Military

There are other points but basically these are the 6 major points if you don't want to be screwed over/invaded/harrased by hegemonic states.

Long post 2: the rant returns

ah....there we go I think I just shat a whole essay, now let me just pick out the relevant crap.

More frequently and more obvious however was media bias on their favored/unfavored policies, slander became a common term when describing news interviews no matter which side you're on, it's even more depressing that the networks doesn't even hide the fact that they take sides.

Watching the Iraqi war coverage on multiple news channels was a fun activity, you have BBC international reporting with a flat, monotonous, unexciting yet gave nothing but reports, CNN international tried to be a little more neutral than their local American version by having less opinionated interviews and only giving out some reports and figures, the local Australian networks doesn't seem to care until an Australian soldier shot himself on the leg or got killed by friendly fire, then there was the Fox, it hardly featured the torture of "enemy combatants" done by the Americans, all I heard from them was "go go go!! serves those towel heads right", that apparently was the American version of journalistic professionalism.

The print media wasn't doing any better it was all left or right but since 990% of the print media was owned by the same bunch of old bastards who owned the rest of the news network I wasn't surprised. News articles talking about the evils of gay marriages, spotlighting stereotype muslim terrorist, pointing out the possibilities of small no name towns becomes a target for terrorist attacks and the evils of video games. Journalism now is disastrous, speaking of disasters....

Not long after the whole US "election", Iraqi war and all that sort became an everyday news a small tremor in the base of the Indian Ocean caused the destruction of entire cities and death of more than half a million people in Indonesia and a significant number in neighboring (and not so neighboring) areas. I can't forget the date it was the 26th of December, it was boxing day, while people I know were boxing their presents these people were boxing their relatives. On the spot reports came in a matter of minutes from local and international news networks, it was probably the biggest natural disaster in this decade, almost every major news network were there to cover it, almost, someone was missing and when they reported it was only snippets, not even a major interview. Sometime after, a sweet little whirlwind called Katrina (or as I like to call it Katty) came down to New Orleans to play some music, and play she did. Just when you think you can't go wrong with reporting natural disasters the media managed to make this a political issue, especially after that "Bush hates black people" comment. On one side of the news the reports were all about how fast the US government reacted and praising the efforts and speed of federal emergency workers in handling the situation, on the other side as always was the ugly fact.

The main thing is if the media isn't too busy chucking shit at each other they're busy scaring the readers and audiences and this isn't just in western media, in fact local Indonesian news are doing it much worse than the Americans when it comes to scare tactics, most people I know here have become desensitized by it but they keep on watching, the Japanese media aren't any different either, but at least scaring people with things that happened can still be counted as news rather than reporting on opinions, and yes I'm more than aware that opinions may be helpful or may give further insight to a situation but repeating the same opinions every day looks way too much like a propagation of an ideology.

To me objectivity in the media died, it died when the media owners thought they should do more than report the news, it died when these people decided to play a dangerously addictive game called politics. I don't expect a happy news every time I switched on my TV, in fact I'd rather not see "happy news" everyday because we all know when that happens something is wrong with the media, when I watch or read news I want to know what happened and why it happened from a neutral angle but that's probably as likely seeing ex-dictator Suharto arrested, tried and sentenced to cleaning mall toilets for life.

Before I begin I have to say that I have done no research whatsoever with regards to the history of news and journalism, views expressed bellow are of my own personal view of how news are being presented, O.K, now that's out of the way let's begin.

Much like almost everyone else I never found the news to be exciting, on television it was nothing but one or two people speaking monotonously with a video montage while on the papers it was nothing but a bunch of words with some pictures on it, it's no wonder that most people don't like following the news it's boring. It was not until junior high I find myself being drawn to these texts and pictures and not because they changed how it was presented, although it did help make the news more palatable, I was actually drawn to the news, I started to read more newspapers and magazines, particularly 'Time' and 'The Jakarta Post' (local newspapers gave me headaches) when I moved to Singapore to do my O-levels I was almost always the first person in the dormitory to wake up to read the morning papers before it was shredded to pieces by some ignorant kids who had no respect for other people who wants to read the papers. There I expanded my sources, I read the local Strait Times, Newsweek, I even read USA Today, Ok I admit they weren't the best news source bit it gave me different perspectives about the world and particularly about people, right then I had an idea what field of study I wanted to do.

Several years later I sat down in one of my lectures listening to my lecturers explaining about the media control and sociological effect of the media, coming from a place where media were practically state run it didn't come to me as a surprise that propaganda is prominent in ANY country, whether it was state "sponsored" or driven by a bunch of rich old bastards with an agenda. What caught me was the idea of smear campaign, before I became a university student I pretty much took what ever was on the news as fact, with a grain of salt, by the time I finished my 1st year I realized that it was more than just a grain, the salt came in by the truckload, there were so much salt in the news finding facts in the news was like looking for a needle in truckload of salt, there probably was a point where I thought "a cat was rescued by firefighters from a tree" meant something completely different.

Up to this point I've never really seen the notorious Fox news channel only parts of it, then it happened, after a few years my apartment finally had cable, of course the first thing I looked for was the History Channel (I'd be lying if it was a news channel) then I went and looked the news channel, CNN (international) was confirmed and so was BBC, then saw it, Fox new channel, out of morbid curiosity I switched to that channel, lucky for me it was a slow news day it wasn't until a few days later that I was introduced to Sean, Anne and Bill, I watched these three with amusement, the same amusement most people get when they see a freak car accident. All it was was a bunch of angry highly opinionated white people who loves to speak in front of cameras, the scary part was when I found out that the majority of America loved these guys, how did I found out you ask? the simple fact that these people have stayed on air for that long and one of them has published a book that was bought and read by millions. I couldn't go to any of my classes that week due to excessive vomiting.

Then there was the State of the Union Address by none other than the 43rd POTUS. Personally I love hearing the Union address from any president, it's like listening to a person making multiple new years resolution, in fact I think all State of the Union Address needs to be done on the 1st of January. Anyway, it was hilarious seeing how one news channel reported just the major points made by the president and how will it effect the country in the future and the other praising and glorifying every single sentence in the speech, I'd let you decided which channels did what but it was clear that the media no longer reports news objectively.

It's a bird, it's a plane it's.....

One of the best Superman movie ever!! as far as Superman movies go anyway

Before I say anything else I have to say that I was never a big fan of the comic book itself or Superman as a super hero character I'm more of a Batman person when it comes to DC characters, but still, to me Superman is THE iconic symbol for an American super hero image, heck he practically started the whole thing.

Moving right along. I do find somethings in it somewhat disappointing (Superman in Gotham? some cave-dwelling multibillionaire playboy is not going to like it very much) but the bulk of it is just like your good old Superman movies (not including Superman 4) when I first watched it way back when I was still in elementary school, on laser disc (I'm not THAT old) but with much better special effects.

In terms of the actors and actresses Brandon Routh fits very well into the Superman/Clark Kent role, Lois Lane was ok-ish, good but while pretty and played her role well she just didn't stand out that much, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor on the other hand was....... Lex Luthor, or maybe I just like Spacey better than Hackman as Luthor. I just find it odd that Luthor was able to get out of jail since back in Superman 2 he was practically imprisoned in another dimension, like I said one of the few things that I find disappointing.

some personal points I need to make,

First, I'm just glad they decided not to make a movie about the Super "blue electric eel" man, that and they decided against casting Nicolas Cage as Superman.

Second, we all know that Supes is significantly stronger than every other human being but how strong is he supposed to be really? lifting planes and truck are one thing but uprooting a whole island?

Third and final point, how long does Superman's power supply last? if he stayed away from the earth's sun for 5 years wouldn't that mean his supply would be out by then?

I like the Footbal World Cup for one reason, people stay up late to watch it until early in the morning causing them to wake up later after the usual peak traffic hours., I on the other hand go to work at the regular time as always....so no heavy morning traffic for this past few weeks for me!

Busy busy busy

What a week, handling documents and complaining parents all week and slow response from some institutions over the weekdays, foundation year students "graduation" ceremony on Friday night, whirlwind tour of Jakarta on Satrurday and on the 7th day I rested. I don't think this week will be any slower.

As they say "life is a learning experience", we never stop learning from the day we are born until the last day we draw breath. We learn that being pinched causes a degree pain, then we learn to walk on two legs but it would be false to assume that everyone would learn the same things from the same experience. We learn to preceive things in our own way and from this we learn that some of our views are in contrast with others. Some of us learn from past mistakes whether it'd be our own or from others, there are those who have learned to immortalize themselves through different ways but mainly through legacies and memories while those who follow learns from such people. Strange how two simple words can define a persons entire existence.

I watched X Men 3 sometime ago, the move itself was ok-ish, in fact I've completely forgoten that I watched it after hanging out in a cafe so it wasn't that impressive, I guess Hollywood & most audience are satisfied with mediocrity these days, but that's not my main point here. X men have always been about how people are different and that people should accept others for what they are and not be affraid of it, that and endless emo, adultery, lies and all other everyday things for the last 30+ years, then I wonder had such mutants really existed as they are depicted will they be held in reverence like how the audience or readers see these fictional characters or will they be casted away and ridiculed like the non caucasian community in the US back in the 50s or homosexuals or transexuals of today? like how the mutants are treated in the comic books.
